Only the military institutions of the Western Union (the Western Union Defence Organisation) were absorbed by NATO. The WU itself was rebranded as the Western European Union (WEU) in 1954 under the Modified Treaty of Brussels and it lasted until 2011.
Excellent piece. The importance of making the case domestically seems too often to be overlooked, and we went last year through a general election campaign with hardly anyone talking about the wider world. One thing Bevin did well was working closely with Eden as the main Conservative spokesman, sometimes to the political embarrassment of both - Oliver Lyttelton quipped to Eden about "The Importance of Being Anthony". The government today should equally make every effort to carry other parties with it.
Good article . I worry that there simply isn’t the leadership potential in British politics today to take the sensible course of action you suggest . Expenditure on RN and RAF should be prioritised ; lessons should be learnt from the IDF and Ukrainian army ; ideas shared with Netherlands, Poland , Hungary , Israel , Japan , Finland , Sweden , Estonia . And most importantly, communications with the American military dramatically improved. Furthermore, planning should commence for a swiss type civil defence system - everybody 18- 50 involved in basic training and arming , annual updates and communications system installed .
If it would be only so easy. The US does not come across too trustworthy when it comes to European interest, hence issues with the time honored bridge concept. That could come cross at fence sitting and therefore doesn’t help to lead Europe, esp from a country that just turned its back on the organised Europe. Wonder what Bevin would done it that situation?

Yes, you are correct. We should have made that clearer.
Excellent article.
